This is the one Walking Trees is built around. You launch right at the mangrove tunnel’s doorstep — no long transfer, no waiting — and paddle straight into a long, straight tunnel where the canopy closes overhead completely. It’s not winding, and we won’t claim it is; a long straight corridor of green light has its own quiet drama, like paddling down a cathedral aisle roofed in mangrove roots. Sunrise departures (6:00 AM) put you inside the tunnel in the same light as the actual sunrise, a few minutes before it breaks. The route continues out through the arch, past a natural swimming spot, and back along the Ithikkara River.

Frequently asked

How far is Mangrove Forest Kayaking from Varkala?
About 25 minutes’ drive from Varkala Cliff. Walking Trees is in Nedungolam, Paravoor, Kollam — one of the closest mangrove tunnel kayaking experiences to Varkala.
Is the mangrove tunnel winding or straight?
Straight. It’s a long, closed-canopy corridor rather than a winding maze — the appeal is the enclosed, cathedral-like stretch of green light overhead, not switchbacks.
What’s the minimum age for this activity?
We recommend a minimum age of 8. Every participant wears a certified life jacket regardless of swimming ability, and a guide accompanies every session.
Which departure time is best?
The 6:00 AM sunrise slot is genuinely the most requested — you’re inside the tunnel as the sun actually comes up. Late-day slots (4:00–4:30 PM) also catch good light on the open-water sections.
